The BIU Journal of Basic and AppliedSciences (BIUJBAS) is published by the Faculty of Science, Benson Idahosa University, P. M. B. 1100 Benin City, Nigeria.
Research articles written in English are invited from interested Scholars and Researchers in the academic community, industry and other establishments for publication in the subject areas covering the biological, physical and applied sciences.
There are two options for submission of manuscripts:
1. Electronic submission: the submission of articles in electronic form is highly recommended. This should be sent via e-mail to the Editor-in-Chief. Authors should submit complete manuscript in Microsoft word document format. Please include details of corresponding author as well as e-mail address. Soft copies written in recordable CD/ROM are also acceptable.
2. Postal submission: the complete manuscript should be sent in triplicate to the Editor-in-Chief.
Following the acceptance of a manuscript, an electronic version of the final manuscript is needed for production.
Plan of the Manuscript
A paper in BIUJBAS should have the following parts: Title, abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion and references.
Title – This should be brief, informative and carefully chosen. It should reflect important aspects of the study and contain appropriate keywords for easy information retrieval. There should be no abbreviations, italics or authorities in the titles.
Capitalize first letter only of important words. Author’s name(s), affiliation and institutional address, e-mail and telephone of corresponding author should then follow.
Abstract– The abstract should be a brief summary of the methodology or instrumentation results and discussion; these should be informative, followed by carefully chosen additional key words or phrase in italics. A solid line should be used to separate the body of write-up from abstract.
Introduction – This section should explain the purpose of the research and cite relevant and current literature on the subject. It should orientate the contribution in its field and justify the essence of the study.
Material and Methods – Describe clearly what was done and used, to allow for the repetition of the work by others. State standard procedures, but give details of new methods and instruments, citing sources of relevant methods and materials used previously by other workers. Details of modified standard procedures should be stated.
Results– A logicaland coherent sequence should be followed in the presentation of data. Only relevant tables, illustrations and graphs should be included. The same data should not be used in more than one way. Professional and scientific words with exact meanings should be used. Utilize illustrations to allow for economic space management. Show in the margin of the MS where each figure and table should appear.
Discussion – This section should relate the results to known knowledge of the subject. Theorize on the significance of the results, within limits, and indicate logical deductions. Cite relevant literature only, and minimize the discussion. Undue repetition of the methodology and results should be avoided in this section.
References– These should appear in all details with author’s names listed alphabetically on separate sheets. All listed references must be cited in the text and vice versa. The style should be as in most scientific journals e.g.,(for journal articles) Oboh, F. O. J. 2004. Triacyglycerols of palm oil. Benin Sci. Dig. 2(1): 79-85.;(part of a book) Ayanru, D. K. G. 1980. Agricultural and clinical significance of some microbial components of the air spora in the Benin City area, p.107-117. In Global Impact of Applied Microbiology, Academic Press, London (a book) Osagie, A. U. 2009. Change and choice: The Development of Private Universities in Nigeria. Reward Fortune Resources, Benin City. 206pp.
Units – Use of the S.I. units is obligatory
Numbers – As a rule, numerals are not used to start sentences; words are preferred. In addition, words should be used for all numerals less than 10 and numerals for those greater than 10. If a number is followed immediately by a unit of measurement, use the numeral, e.g., 5 g, 200 m.
Latin Names – Authorities for Latin names must be indicated the first time such names are used but not subsequently. Latin words used to identify biological structures or entities are always italicized; similar phrases like in situ, in vivo, versus, per se, et al. On the other hand, commonly used abbreviations such as etc., viz, and e.g. do not require.
Table, Photographs, Illustrations-These are to be numbered with Arabic numerals in sequences on separate pages with relevant headings and lower case footnotes. They should be clear on their own without grid lines foldout and not exceeding a normal page.
Peer Review – All submitted manuscripts are subject to a peer-review process.
Page Charges and Reprints – Page charges will be indicated in the letter of provisional acceptance to the authors. Authors will receive PDF copies of the journal.
