IMPACT OF BUSH BURNING ON MACRONUTRIENTS AND TRACE ELEMENTS IN A FARMLAND AT OKHA, NEAR BENIN CITY, EDO STATE.
IKEJEH, V. C. AND *OKONOKHUA, B. O.

ABSTRACT
Bush burning is a practice used to prepare land for cultivation in Nigeria but there is uncertainty about its effect on soil properties. The study assessed the effects of the operation on soil pH, macronutrients and trace elements. Soil samples were collected from a delineated part of a gentle sloping undulating farmland located at Okha, near Benin City before and after bush burning which was subjected to analysis of some macro nutrients and trace…

NUTRITIONAL AND PHYTOCHEMICAL PROFILING OF Vernonia amygdalina AND Dacryodes edulis LEAVES: IMPLICATIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS.
*OKUGBO, O. T.,1 KILLIAN, A. E.,2 OMORALOJIE, F. O.,2 AGHAYERE, F.,1 EBHONU, J. P.,2 ERHOVWOSERE, O.3 AND OMOREGIE, E. S.3

ABSTRACT
This study provides an in-depth analysis of the nutritional composition and phytochemical profile of aqueous extracts from Vernonia amygdalina (V. amygdalina) and Dacryodes edulis (D. edulis) leaves. Proximate and mineral analyses, along with phytochemical screening and HPLC quantification, were conducted to evaluate their nutritional and phytochemical constituents. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed between the two plants in crude protein, ash content, moisture content, nitrogen-free extracts, crude fiber, and crude lipids. Macro and micronutrient compositions also varied, with V. amygdalina having higher concentrations of zinc, iron, potassium, sodium, and magnesium, while D. edulis had higher levels of…

ENERGY AND COMBUSTION POTENTIALS OF SOME SELECTED TROPICAL FUELWOOD SPECIES IN IKWUANO LGA, ABIA STATE.
OGUIBE, A. L.,1 UBUOH, E. A.,1 ADINDU, N. D.1 AND *OTI, V. O.2

ABSTRACT
This study aimed at assessing the energy, and combustion potential of some selected tropical fuelwood in Ikwuano, Abia State. The study sampled, four micro communities from four major communities of Ikwuano: Ibere (Itunta), Oboro (Umugbalu), Ariam (Ekpiri) and Oloko (Nchara). Major locally wood species (Ukwa (Dialum guineense), Icheku (Pterocarpus species), Cocoa (Theobroma Cacao), Ube (Dacryodes edulis), Umummiri (Morinda coreia), Ojii (Milicea excelsa), Ububa1 (Anthonotha macrophylla), Ububa2 (A. crassifolia), Obia (Caloncoba welwitschii), Oron (Cnestis ferrugina)) used across these…

ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF URBAN RUNOFF ON FISH SPECIES IN IKPOBA RIVER: HISTOPATHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF METAL ACCUMULATION IN MUSCLE TISSUE OGBEIDE, O. OGBEIDE, G. AND OKODUWA, K.

ABSTRACT
This study examined the impact of urban runoff on the Ikpoba River in Benin City, Nigeria, focusing on heavy metal contamination in water, sediments, and fish species, and the histopathological changes in fish muscle tissues. The findings revealed significant levels of Pb, Cr, Ni, Co, and Cd in water, sediments, and fish tissues, with temporal fluctuations across sampling sites. Statistical analysis showed significant variations in heavy metal concentrations: Co (1.23 ± 0.34 mg/L) and Ni (0.97 ± 0.28 mg/L) in water, Pb (56.8 ± 10.2 mg/kg) in sediment, and Cr (4.32 ± 1.02 mg/kg), Ni (3.78 ± 0.85 mg/kg), and Pb (5.94 ± 1.48 mg/kg) in fish tissues (P < 0.05). The accumulation of these metals….

BORATES-STABILIZED SILVER NANOCLUSTERS: POST-SYNTHESIS LIGANDS EXCHANGE REACTION WITH CYSTEINE.
OYEM, H. H 1, 2 AND OYEM, I. M.3

ABSTRACT
The lability of the inorganic capping ligands on silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) formed by the microemulsion method was studied in an exchange reaction with cysteine amino acid in aqueous conditions. The essence was to study the feasibility of this exchange reaction in vivo systems with similar biomolecules especially in the field of medicine and drug delivery systems mimicking antigens–antibody reactions in immunology and immunochemistry. Ag NCs were synthesized in microemulsion….

ARE OUR WATERS SAFE? INVESTIGATING HEAVY METAL RISKS IN THE IKPOBA RIVER ECOSYSTEM.
OGBEIDE, O. AND OGBEIDE, G.

ABSTRACT
The Ikpoba River, a crucial waterway in the rainforest belt of Edo State, Nigeria, has raised concerns regarding heavy metal contamination and its potential risks to the local population and ecosystem. This study aimed to assess the risk of heavy metal contamination in the water, sediment, and Clarias gariepinus and Tilapia zilli of the Ikpoba River. Water, sediment, and fish samples were collected and analyzed for heavy metals, including lead (Pb), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), and nickel (Ni). The results showed significant concentrations of Pb, Co, Cr, and Ni in the water samples, with the Metal Index (MI)
increasing from 2.633 in May to 3.523 in June, exceeding…
