Domestic Waste Management in Nigeria and Selected Jurisdictions (2011) Okani,  J.O.Introduction

“No laws can save nature, it’s only man himself that can do it, so we     have to charge ourselves to protect nature and the environment”

Rapid urbanisation and the associated growth of industry and services is a key feature of economic and demographic development. Cities are currently absorbing two-thirds of the total population increase throughout the developing world. Statistics posted on line by the united Nations Department of Economic and social affairs [herein referred to as [DESA] reveal that about 1.9 billion people were estimated to populate the urban areas of developing countries by the year 2000. Legislation on environmental protection whether in the form of global regional or domestic laws are not ending in themselves and cannot save the environment. Unless we take conscious steps to redeem, protect and maintain our God-given resources and environment, we may end up living in squalor.
