Privatization of the Prison System as a Panacea for Prison Problem in Nigeria: Myth Or Reality (2015) Simon-Peter, Ayooluwa St. EmmanuelAbstract

The prison system and welfare of prisoners in Nigeria have attracted lots of attention and has been of great concern because Nigeria prison is overcrowded due to the use of imprisonment as a form of punishment. The right and dignity of prisoners are daily breached through overcrowding, dirty sanitary condition, blocked or non-existent toilets and non-availability of bed to sleep on, amongst others thereby causing riots within prisons. The aims of imprisonment as a form of reforming offenders have not been achieved and there is a high rate of reforming offenders have not been achieved and there is a high rate of recidivism amongst as a panacea to prison problems in Nigeria and argues that privatization will state that the Nigeria government should be cautious in adopting privatization. It advocates non-custodial forms of punishment. It also recommends the new administration of criminal justice act 2015 on non-custodial punishment in order to reduce overcrowding and overstretching of prison facilities and also curb recidivism.
